Had the absolute pleasure of being best man for Sean (who married Prue on the weekend) here’s my speech (as I actually wrote it)

I first met Sean when we undertook our Cert 3&4 in Fitness at Australian institute of Fitness (AIF) we just kinda started hanging out because he was a fun guy. We got through the 16 week course in no time and quickly developed friendships with a number of other guys as well: Gracey and John Callaghan.

After we finished up at AIF we decided to start a bootcamp. Gracie fell by the wayside and john started with us until he got accepted into the coppers. We chose Lennox Gardens and bit by bit established a group of super keen exercisers. The bootcamp thing expanded into a group of guys that trained with us a couple of nights a week out of our small garage in Palmerston.

Who would have known that Adapt would grow into what it has today from our humble beginnings. I can tell you mate that it wouldn’t be anything like it is with out your steady hand and support. You have helped to create what Adapt has now become and I’m stoked to have you as a mate.

There have been more than a few girls come through the gym hoping to catch Sean’s eye but as always he was quite content to wait for the right one. It wasn’t until Prue came along and stole the show so completely, that it all seemed worth the wait.

You are a man of few words and so when you speak, people listen. You have absolute control of the sessions you run in the gym but it’s so good to sit back and watch you do a one on one. You have an understanding that goes way beyond your years and a genuine compassion for the people you train.

He probably wouldn’t say it but he’s got a bit of a heart for kids too. When he plays with Lachie or protectively stands behind Astrid you can see it. It like a glimpse of Sean as a dad sometime in the future (I know you say it’s a long way down the track) but I’ll be so excited to see you become a father – it’ll grow you in every way.

It’s been absolutely incredible to see you grow as a young man and an athlete. Your dedication to your chosen sport and patience for people. I’ve never known someone so young to be so centered, calm and consistent. So diligent, dedicated and loyal. These are all the character traits of a great man -> Bernie and Sue, Sean is a champion, you have done well and should be very proud!

I don’t know much and I’m still learning as I go but here’s some advice from a mate that’s been married for 15 years. Hopefully you can take something from the following and see your marriage blossom into a lifelong, rewarding partnership with Prue.

For Sean

  1. Affection -> always be affectionate with Prue -> especially in public -> this shows her and others where your heart truly lies.
  2. Pick up after yourself -> she’s not your mum. It might seem like a little thing to you but it’s a big one for your wife.
  3. Empower your wife -> be the platform for your wife to do great things -> see the greatness in her and encourage her in all her undertakings
  4. Never get complacent -> Your courtship should never stop. Continue to take her out, flirt with her and make her laugh. Your marriage should get better as every day passes – you’ve just gotta continue to make the effort you did before you were married.

For Prue

  1. Always. Always praise your man in public -> You need to be Sean’s strongest supporter and defend him ferociously. I’m sure there’ll be times when he gets it wrong but confront him in private – just never in public.
  2. Support him and encourage him to follow his dreams -> Behind every great man is an exceptional woman and I truly believe that you can be that exceptional woman for Sean.

Final words

I wish the both of you the very best in your new journey together and want you to know that both Becca and I will be around to offer you support and advice should you ever need it.
