OK so let’s set things straight: No, I do not normally rock around in ‘booty’ shorts and yes, that will be the last time you’ll ever see me in them. Maybe.

Who had the shortest shorts? Mikey did.
Amber’s muscle-up victory prize
Ages ago we (I swear it was both Sean and I) made a deal to dress up as CrossFit chicks (booty shorts, long socks, tight singlets) when a girl finally got a muscle-up at Adapt. We knew it was not going to be a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ as the whole point of what we do is to make our crew strong – so they can do party tricks right? Well Amber didn’t disappoint. She worked hard on pull-ups, ring dips and the transitions to finally nail a muscle-up. Congrats – but now it’s time to see the coaches suit up. It’s booty short time!
Amber’s a crafty cat and to make sure all the focus wasn’t on Sean and I, she covertly (no seriously, the coaches had no idea) contacted other Adapt members to organise booty shorts for everyone! It wasn’t until Mikey rocked up in boy leg speedos that we realised we had a revolution on our hands?!
I wouldn’t really class the Adapt crew as a bunch of prudes but up until this point all our girls tended to rock up in 3 quarter length lululemon tights (or their equivalent) and possibly a Lorna Jane sports get up. I say get up because I have absolutely no idea what you’d call them and as I am a man, I don’t need to know. That’s what they’ve always done but I think deep down there’s quite a few of our girls that have been dying to rock out a session in the booty shorts like Camille…
Everyone I’ve spoken to thought Saturday’s session was awesome. It had a great, fun vibe and everyone had their camera’s out to catch the action. All in all it’s probably one of the coolest, community type days that we’ve ever had at Adapt. Yeah it’s all fun and games until…
The Elephant in the room…
After Saturday’s session I was pretty interested to see which of our girls would now think it was OK to start rocking out booty shorts to our regular sessions. I’m not saying it’s not OK but as I mentioned earlier, up until this point no one really has. I do think there’s more than a couple of our girls that have been thinking about doing it and now that it’s been done, well perhaps it’d be OK?! I mean we do CrossFit right? It comes with the territory… Camille wears it. Lauren wears it. “I’m pretty fit chick so I think I’ll wear it…” There are even other girls at other boxes in Canberra that also wear it…
Then it happened. It’s Tuesday, only three days later and sure enough, we had our first girl rock booty shorts at a regular session: 2XU, hot pink, hot pants. Whoa!
Nobody said anything. People did their best to act if nothing was different. But it was. It was ‘The Elephant in the Room’. You didn’t say anything. I mean, you couldn’t. But everyone knew about it and to quote a most excellent movie Bridesmaids, you may have thought “Look away! Look away…” but you just couldn’t. Because there they were, somebody’s Booty shorts in all their hot, pink, ‘bootylicious’ glory. OK. perhaps if they had been black it would have been different. Yeah perhaps… but perhaps not…
The male to female ratio was about 8:2. The guys we’re trying to find their 1RM snatch but all they could see was someone’s sn… well you know what I’m saying…
The big question: Where to from here?
Adapt is a reasonably young CF Box and we’re still working out what we want to be when we grow up. Up until this point we’ve always been able to provide our members with a great place to train. Occasionally some people get their feathers ruffled but more often then not our guys and girls train hard and get results. We just cracked our 100th member so we must be doing something right?! We train people from a number of different cultural and religious backgrounds, we train single people and couples but after all the fun on Saturday, where to from here?
Does Adapt do Booty shorts now or was ‘Booty Challenge’ Saturday a one-off? Do girls (or guys) get offended when other girls wear shit that leaves nothing to the imagination and flipping the card: does anyone get offended when a guy takes off his shirt? Should reducing the amount of fabric that covers your body be based on your aesthetic appeal? I mean I find it hard to do a metcon with a shirt on although it is something I’ve been working on (wearing a shirt while working out -> to get comfortable being uncomfortable…)
What’s acceptable and what’s not? I don’t have the answer but I do think it’s an interesting discussion worth having. What do you think?

i don’t really care. just don’t come dressed to an image, then act like a kook. so annoying.
ps amber you look killer in this shot! go girl! (you do too guys, in a weird creepy kinda way 🙂
I love Amber’s cloud socks! I’m a big fan of funky socks, maybe I shed get a pair of booth shorts just so I have an excuse to wear awesome socks more often.
